Our Mission—Serving Those Who’ve Served

May 2010

Text Box: Student Veterans and Supporters:

ACE “Success for Veterans” Jam—OCP was honored to be asked to serve as a facilitator at the ACE “Veterans for Success Jam.” For those, who like me, had no idea what a “Jam” is, it’s a real-time online virtual collaboration where groups of individuals ranging from a few hundred to hundreds of thousands can join in an interactive and innovative group discussion. During the Jam, designated hosts and facilitators guided the conversation questions and help participants to build on each other’s ideas to support the meaningful exchange of perspectives around a shared topic. Topics discussed included defining “military friendly,” transfer of credit, The Post-9/11 GI Bill, transitioning to college, and more. Thousands of veterans and their families, service members, campus leaders, nonprofit organizations, and government agencies from around the country joined the conversation that will pave the way for a new round of initiatives to assist our service members transition to college. Thanks to those who stopped by to say hello!
Commencement 2010—Honoring our Veterans—This year an unprecedented number of colleges and universities started a new tradition of providing honor cords to their graduating veterans. A small token, but perhaps symbolic of a new and improved environment and one we can all take pride in. A salute to all of you on campus who made this longstanding goal a reality!
OCP Welcomes William Paterson’s Sgt. Lynette Butler—Another energetic and talented staff member has joined the ranks of veterans’ services. Sgt. Butler is the new Coordinator of Veterans Services at William Paterson University and is already making her mark. Welcome Lynette!
Stockton Veterans’ Scholarship Golf Outing—This inaugural event raised $12,000 for student veterans’ scholarship funding. Congratulations to Tom O’Donnell, Patrick Shields, Martha McGinnis and Bob Ford on a very successful event and for ordering up some perfect weather! If you didn’t make it this year, be sure to look for information in the Spring of 2011 and make plans to attend.
Certification for Veterans Service Providers (CVSP) Workshop—June 22-24, 2010—Registration is now open for this event at Stockton College. Don’t miss this chance to be part of the 2010 class!
Honor and Remember Trenton Event—June 10th at 1 p.m.—George Lutz, founder of Honor and Remember will be in Trenton to present a personalized flag to a local Gold Star mother at the World War II Memorial on West State Street. Come on down and see the beautiful memorial and meet George as he travels across the country to promote formalizing the flag as a national symbol for the fallen. For more information on the event, call Wendy Lang at (609) 989-1100. You can read more about the story here.
Happy Memorial Day—Don’t forget to thank a Vet as you celebrate their many sacrifices, along with the first week of Summer 2010!
